Rosco Off Broadway Scenic Paint
A palette of rich, flat theatrical colors in a flexible vinyl acrylic binder.
Description
Rosco Off Broadway Scenic Paint
The scenic paint that’s been quietly painting Broadway, regional theatre, and film sets for decades.
If you’ve ever walked past a freshly painted backdrop and wondered how it looks that rich and that flat under stage lights, odds are you were looking at Off Broadway. Rosco’s flagship scenic paint has earned its spot in the paint kits of working scenic artists for one simple reason: it just works.
What you’re getting
Off Broadway is a vinyl acrylic paint built specifically for stagecraft. The pigments are dense, the binder is flexible (so it won’t crack when your flats get loaded in and out of a truck for the fourth time this season), and the finish dries dead matte — no weird sheen fighting your lighting designer. Available in 27 artist colors plus 5 metallics, the palette covers everything from a saturated Pthalo Blue down to the murkier Van Dyke Browns and Raw Umbers you’ll reach for during distress work.
Why scenic artists keep coming back
- Use it straight or thin it down. Brush it on full strength for opaque coverage, or cut it with water for washes, glazes, and aging effects. Push past 2 parts water and you’ll want to add Rosco Clear Acrylic Glaze to keep the binder happy.
- Sticks to almost anything. Muslin, wood, metal, wallboard, most plastics — if it shows up in your scene shop, Off Broadway will grab onto it. Just prime porous surfaces (except fabric) with Rosco Tough Prime first.
- Plays nice with the rest of the Rosco lineup. Mix it with Iddings Deep Colors, Supersaturated, or any other Rosco scenic paint without compatibility headaches.
- Cleans up with soap and water. Because nobody has time to chase down mineral spirits at 11pm during tech week.

Who this is for
Scenic shops, theme parks, film and TV art departments, prop builders, mural artists, school theatre programs upgrading from hardware-store latex, and anyone who needs paint that looks good on camera and survives a load-out.
A note on house paint vs. Off Broadway: Yes, you can buy a gallon of flat latex for less. But house paint is built to sit still on a wall — not get rolled, folded, struck, and rebuilt. Off Broadway’s binder is designed to flex with your scenery, and the pigment load means you’re usually one coat done instead of three.
Application tips from the shop floor
Stir well — don’t shake. Apply in thin, even coats with a wet edge, and switch up your roller direction so you don’t end up with tracking. Don’t paint below 50°F, don’t let it freeze, and ventilate when you’re spraying.
