Rosco Clear Acrylic Glazes: The Essential Topcoat for Scenic Artists
Whether you are painting a sprawling theatrical backdrop or finishing a high-traffic stage floor, Rosco Clear Acrylic Glazes provide the durability and flexibility scenic artists rely on. Available in both Flat and Gloss finishes, these versatile vinyl acrylic mediums are designed specifically for the demands of stagecraft, offering a reliable way to protect your hard work from the inevitable wear and tear of production life.
Unlike standard hardware store polyurethanes that can yellow or crack under stage lights, Rosco’s water-based glazes are formulated to work seamlessly with scenic paints. They dry clear, maintain the flexibility of your drops, and give you complete control over the final sheen of your set pieces.
Protect Your Scenery and Stage Floors
The primary job of any topcoat is protection, and Rosco Clear Acrylic Glazes excel at defending painted surfaces against incidental abuse, scratches, and spills. When applied over a painted stage floor, these glazes act as a sacrificial layer, taking the brunt of the foot traffic so your paint treatment doesn’t have to.
Because you can mix the Flat and Gloss finishes together in any ratio, you have total control over the depth and reflectivity of your final surface. Need a dead-flat finish to avoid glare from stage lighting? Use the Flat glaze straight from the can. Want a wet-look cobblestone street? The Gloss finish delivers a brilliant shine. For everything in between, simply blend the two until you achieve your desired satin or eggshell sheen.
Note: While highly durable for standard theatrical use, these glazes do not offer the same heavy-duty protection as a two-part urethane. For extreme abuse or heavily tracked moving scenery, consider upgrading to Rosco Clear ColorCoat or Premiere Clear.
Enhance Adhesion and Flexibility
Beyond acting as a protective topcoat, Rosco Clear Acrylic Glazes are incredibly useful as a paint additive. When mixed directly into your paint, they increase both the adhesion and the flexibility of the mixture.
This is especially valuable when working with paints that have a weaker binder strength, such as traditional casein or tempera paints like Iddings Deep Colors. Adding just 1 to 2 cups of Clear Acrylic Glaze per gallon of paint will significantly improve its ability to stick to non-porous surfaces, while also making the dried finish more resistant to burnishing and water damage.
Application and Technical Specifications
Applying Rosco Clear Acrylic Glazes requires a bit of care to ensure a perfectly clear, cloud-free finish. The most critical step is dilution: you must always dilute the glaze at least 1:1 with water. Applying the glaze straight out of the can, or applying coats that are too thick, can cause the medium to dry with a milky, clouded appearance.
For the best results, apply multiple thin, uniform coats using a high-quality brush, roller, or Hudson sprayer. When rolling, be sure to keep a wet edge and change your roller direction frequently to avoid leaving visible patterns or streaks.
